It’s hot and humid up here in Minnesota, but that won’t stop us from having some fun. From cultural experiences to outdoor adventures, here are some ways to enjoy Saint Paul without spending a a fortune this summer. I have experienced them all!
1. Como Park Zoo & Conservatory: Nestled in the heart of Saint Paul, Como Park offers free admission to its stunning zoo and conservatory. Wander through lush gardens, marvel at exotic plants, and encounter animals from around the world, all amidst a beautifully landscaped park. I have taken my children to Como at least 100 times over the years, and it remains a family favorite.
2. Summit Avenue Walking Tour: Embark on a self-guided walking tour along Summit Avenue, one of the country’s most picturesque residential streets. Lined with historic mansions and stunning architecture, this avenue offers a glimpse into Saint Paul’s rich past and the lives of its early elite residents. Summer is the best for wandering Summit since many people book Summit mansions as wedding venues!
3. Minnesota State Capitol Tour: Delve into the state’s political history with a free guided tour of the Minnesota State Capitol. Explore the majestic marble halls, learn about the legislative process, and admire the Capitol’s impressive artwork and architecture, including the Quadriga sculpture atop the dome.
4. Rice Park Events and Concerts: Throughout the summer, Rice Park hosts a variety of free events, including concerts, festivals, and outdoor movie screenings. Relax on the park’s green lawn surrounded by historic landmarks and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. Google summer nights in Rice for up to date events.
5. Saint Paul Farmers’ Market: Experience the bustling Saint Paul Farmers’ Market, where you can browse locally grown produce, artisanal goods, and handmade crafts. Sample fresh produce, chat with local vendors, and immerse yourself in the community spirit of this beloved market. In June, there will be flowers galore, then July brings an enormous selection of vegetables from local growers, all for cheaper than you’ll pay in the supermarkets.
6. Phalen Regional Park: Escape into nature at Phalen Regional Park, offering scenic trails, a swimming beach, and picnic areas. Take a leisurely stroll along the lakeside promenade, rent a paddleboat or kayak, or simply relax on the sandy beach and soak up the sun. My kids will ride their bikes over to Phalen to use the trails to avoid biking in city traffic.
7. Gibbs Farm Museum: Step back in time at the Gibbs Farm Museum, where you can explore historic buildings, gardens, and exhibits showcasing Minnesota’s pioneer era. Learn about Native American history, early European settlers, and traditional farming practices in the region.

Just make sure to make note of where you parked since it can be easy to get turned around during road construction season!
9. Harriet Island Regional Park: Located along the Mississippi River, Harriet Island Regional Park is perfect for a day of relaxation and recreation. Wander through scenic trails, enjoy panoramic river views, and visit the park’s historic pavilion—all while savoring the tranquility of this waterfront retreat. There will also often be fairs set up as well in the Summer months.
10. Historic Cave Tour at Wabasha Street Caves: Discover Saint Paul’s hidden history with a free tour of the Wabasha Street Caves. Learn about the caves’ storied past as a speakeasy during Prohibition, explore underground passages, and hear tales of gangsters and bootleggers from the city’s past.
