You may have heard Minnesota is merely a cloud of mosquitos during the hot and humid summers, and I won’t deny that reality, but there are some fun things here as well for the summer lovers. If you’re lucky enough to spend your summer in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, here are 10 activities that promise to make your season fun, or at least memorable. Grab your bug spray and check out this list to make some summer plans!
1. Explore the Boundary WatersÂ
Paddle your way through pristine lakes and winding rivers in this outdoor paradise. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a first-timer, the Boundary Waters offer unmatched beauty and tranquility. Camp under the stars, fish for walleye, and immerse yourself in the wilderness. Just make sure you book your reservation with an outfitter well in advance, preferably by February.
2. Visit the North Shore and Explore Split Rock Lighthouse
Take a scenic drive along the rugged North Shore of Lake Superior and marvel at breathtaking views of the world’s largest freshwater lake. Don’t miss a visit to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, where you can tour the historic lighthouse and hike along stunning cliffside trails. While you are there, check out Glensheen Mansion and Two Harbors.
3. Bike the Paul Bunyan Trail
Hop on your bike and pedal along the Paul Bunyan Trail, a 120-mile path that winds through charming towns, lush forests, and alongside sparkling lakes. Stop for ice cream in quaint cafes and keep an eye out for Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues along the way.
4. Relax on the Beaches of Lake Minnetonka
Escape the heat and unwind on the sandy shores of Lake Minnetonka, just a short drive from the Twin Cities. Pack a picnic, rent a paddleboard, or simply soak up the sunshine while taking in panoramic views of this iconic lake. There are many restaurants with outdoor patios overlooking the water as well.
5. Attend the Minnesota State Fair
Indulge in all things fried and on a stick at the “Great Minnesota Get-Together” in late summer. From buttery corn on the cob to creative concoctions like deep-fried candy bars, the State Fair offers a feast for the senses along with live music, carnival rides, and agricultural exhibits. My personal favorites are the livestock exhibits. Laugh all you want, but people really underestimate the size of those animals and the care that goes into them.
6. Explore the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
Stroll through one of the largest urban sculpture gardens in the country, located near downtown Minneapolis. Admire iconic works like the Spoonbridge and Cherry, snap photos in front of colorful sculptures, and relax in the green space of this cultural gem.
7. Go to An Art Fair
Wander among the many stalls available at countless art fairs throughout the Twin Cities. While the Uptown art Fair was always popular in previous years, do not discount fairs at the Stone Arch Bridge or Edina.
8. Visit the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory
Discover exotic animals and vibrant plant life at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory in St. Paul. It is free! Explore indoor gardens filled with tropical plants, watch playful animals in their habitats, and enjoy family-friendly attractions like the carousel and mini-golf.
9. Hike to Minnehaha Falls
Escape the city buzz and hike through Minnehaha Regional Park to reach the stunning Minnehaha Falls, a 53-foot waterfall nestled in a lush gorge. Pack a picnic, explore hiking trails along the creek, and cool off with a splash in the refreshing mist of the falls. With all the 2024 rain, the falls are roaring.
10. Cheer at a Minnesota Twins Game at Target Field
Experience the thrill of Major League Baseball at Target Field in downtown Minneapolis. Cheer on the Minnesota Twins, indulge in ballpark snacks like hot dogs and peanuts, and soak up the lively atmosphere of America’s favorite pastime. Just remember your sunscreen, even if it is overcast. Last time, I fried my arms.
From outdoor adventures to cultural experiences and everything in between, Minnesota offers endless opportunities to make the most of your summer. So, get some bug spray, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready to wander.
