Art Sketchbook Theme: Black & White

A sketchbook is meant for experimenting, exploration, and fun. Where all can you go inside your sketchbook?

The minimalism and simplicity of limiting your sketchbook page to black and white can be a burst of freedom.

One sketchbook theme to consider is limiting yourself to black and white, or any monochromatic theme. Don’t get me wrong, I love color. The color journey is my jam. Its even in my branding as my statement: creating a life of vibrant color inspired by nature. However, that doesn’t mean a lack of color or a limited color group isn’t also a great way to spark creativity. When you have no color choices, you can let your mind wander toward the myriad of OTHER elements to consider. Beyond color, we have textures, subjects, patterns, feelings, contrasts……and the most beautiful of all…..just letting your mind go blank and free falling, creating purely on instinct.

A monochromatic sketchbook project let’s you embrace the Zen of just doing with less thinking. Sometimes thinking gets in your way. It can bring up self doubts, anxieties, obsessive thoughts, worries, and distractions. A sketchbook shouldn’t be any of those things. A sketchbook is for playing and exploring.

So, if you are stuck while considering what to do with your next sketchbook, or even just the next couple sketch pages, try the only black & white approach. Whether in pencil, pen, or paint, black & white is an oldie, but a goodie for getting unstuck or just letting go. Everything looks cool in a vintage greyscale.
