Escape to another world. Another time. Another day. Another realm. We all need a creative outlet that brings joy to our lives. An escape that helps us let out pent up tension or allows our thoughts to flow. Some find this outlet through painting, sculpture, exercise, music, writing, or even meditation.
What is yours? Do you even have one? Have you let the stress and hectic scheduling of modern life get in the way of activities that feed your soul? Think back to childhood. We wrote stories. Drew pictures. Played pretend. Daydreamed. We let our creativity flow and it was glorious! Think of how much stress we likely let go of through those outlets as children? This is where adulthood goes wrong. We forget to properly play. We engage in fake relaxation via the internet and reality TV.
Adding Art & Creativity to Everyday Life
I am a big fan of unplugging on occasion and relaxing without a million reminders of this digital age. Play a board game. Read a real paper book. Start journaling. Make a scrapbook. Paint a canvas. Write a short story with pen and paper. Knit a scarf. Bring a blanket outside and nap under a tree listening to birds and smelling the soil.
Letting your creativity flow doesn’t mean you have to be Picasso, or Miles Davis, or Jennifer Weiner. You don’t even have to post it to social media. Your creativity is yours and yours alone. We all need to be selfish every now and then and enjoy the rewards of solitude with our creativity.
If you are stuck on how to find your own creative energy, start with journaling. Find a quiet spot, preferably in nature and or a place where you can fade into the background. Just write. It could be a funny story you remember from your past. A wish for next week. A recipe you concoct in your head on the spot. A description of a flower right in front of you. Just begin writing. (Or drawing!!)
And do it again next week. Every week (Or day), schedule in some journaling time. No one will see it but you, so there’s no pressure.
Once you tap into the creative energy, you may find it leaks into other areas of your life. You may find your problem solving skills at work developing more. You will likely start finding yourself more interested in discovering hobbies. You might become more organized and less mentally cluttered. When you let your creativity flow instead of stifling it, magical things can happen. You unlock parts of your mind and clear out the cobwebs. Give it a try.
