Lately On the Farm

growing corn

I decided to forgo canning this year, so the “harvest season” is less frantic. We pulled all the sweet corn. I am not sure about this variety. Actually, I don’t think the problem was the variety, but rather cross pollination with other corn. There is a reason most of it is grown as a strict mono-culture of one variety. Also, our vegetables did terrible this year, aside from tomatoes. The apply trees did not fruit well either. As in, 36 trees all did not fruit. And the plum grove barely produced. What gives? must have been the late spring.

farm baby

This little nugget turned a year old! Where has the time gone? I am struggling with the idea that she might be my last baby.

guinea fowl 10 week old

The guinea fowl are starting to grow up. hopefully training them to come home won’t be too much hassle.

diy farm fencing

Our run expansion is finally gaining momentum. Although, it is still slow due to the constant rain. post hole digging is tough in wet clay.

sunflower

With the warm weather wrapping up, its is time to feed all the sunflowers to the chickens and ducks to fatten them up for winter. In their current state, my birds are way too skinny to survive the impending cold. Chicken obesity is really not an issue up here. Like the rest of us, they basically shiver off their fluff in the -30 degree months. Eeeep. I am not looking forward to winter.
