Are you a uniform person? Capsule wardrobe person? Or is your closet busting at the seams with every clothing whim imaginable? It doesn’t matter. No matter your wardrobe style, one functional accessory that everybody can appreciate is a fine woven scarf.

Lightweight scarves worn in all weather have been in style for a number of years and are not likely going anywhere. This fashionable piece is part clothing, part accessory, and completely functional. If it is slightly chilly, you can forgo a jacket and use a scarf for a bit of warmth.  Or add a bright scarf to an otherwise bland outfit for some pizzazz.  I tend to wear a lot of black and grey, so scarves, hate, and jewelry always takes center stage.

The nice thing about woven scarves, is they can serve as decor as well. Anywhere a beautiful textile will add depth, a scarf can be used. Depending on the width, they can double as table runners, throws, wall hangings, and more.

These hand woven, fair trade scarves from Education & More are made in Guatemala and serve to further education and quality of life for the artisans’ families. It combines my love of textiles and  fair wages for a great cause.

Why strive for fair trade?

Fair trade means the policies, procedures, payment, and working conditions are FAIR. When an item is sold through a fair trade company, it means no child labor was involved. It means the workers were paid a fair, living wage that can help them pay for food, medical care, and education. It means you are supporting a system with a trickle down effect that helps the economy of the worker’s community.

Education and More: Education Children and Reducing Poverty.

Education and More is a nonprofit christian organization working to reduce poverty in Guatemala. How? Talented women (mothers, daughter, sisters,) use their strengths to create beautiful handcrafted artisanal woven textiles. Education and More then organizes Fair Trade sales of the goods and the artisans receive a fair, living wage for their hard work.

Education and More has a really cool set up. Yes, you can purchase items directly from the website shop. However, the really fun part is hosting a party. Sales parties are nothing new. Many people, usually women, have hosted sales parties for food storage containers, makeup, baskets, and more. An artisanal textiles party through Education and More though, supports women on a whole other level. Most of the creators of these beautiful napkins, tablecloths, scarves,, etc., are women raising children and trying to better their lives. Hosting a fair trade sale means you are trying to make a difference in the lives of these women and supporting their economy. You don’t need to travel far and wide to help fight poverty!
