As the year wraps up this month, I’m thinking more and more about my goals for the next year. I am not a new year resolution type person. If I want to fix a behavior, I start now. But that doesn’t mean I don’t use the new year to mark the passage of time and evaluate my goals. With our ever-growing family, my usual goals these days revolve around organizing and keeping our household functioning. With young kids, a lot of this involves cleaning. We have a lot of mess, a lot of smells, and a lot of laundry. I’m always open to trying any tool that may aide me in successfully navigating messy, chaotic family life.
The biggest challenge is always the laundry. Oh have mercy, the laundry never ends. That challenge just gets more interesting when you consider the cloth diaper laundry.
Diaper laundry used to be considered a complicated art form a few years ago, but luckily the cloth diapering community has loosened up and adopted the “do what works” motto. So give up those compatibility detergent charts and inconvenient, expensive boutique detergents. Try a few ways, and do what works. Keep it simple. Keeping it simple is often the key to success with any goal or resolution.
With that in mind, I’m working with method 4x concentrated laundry detergent on the latest installment of Detergent Wars, or adventures in laundry detergent. I’m considering method 4x concentrated laundry detergent because it fits in with the ‘Keep it Simple’ key to success. Method is available at Target, so it is convenient. It is $12.99 for about 60 small loads, (and cheaper with coupon code below!) So, it is more economical than most boutique detergents. Plus, it comes in a few scents made with fragrance that appears to be mostly equal to other eco detergents.

Does it work for diaper laundry?
So far, it works fine in our top loader with regular-softish water.
Our diaper wash routine includes a warm rinse, hot wash, followed by warm rinse and cold rinse. It rinses clean and doesn’t leave a lingering scent behind. Although the ginger mango scent sure smells nice while the washer is running. I like the fragrance since it makes the diaper smell less noticeable when the washer is running.
I’m not sure about how it would fair in hard water, since I’m not a fan of liquid detergents with hard water.
Using one detergent that is locally available, for all laundry, is far better than going out of my way to acquire separate detergents for diapers, linens, and clothing. One detergent is keeping it simple, and keeping it simple can help me achieve my goal of staying on top of our laundry situation.
