We all know that when shopping the aisles of our local big box store, the cheaply priced goods are often manufactured in environments of very questionable ethics. Low wages, poor working conditions, and markups that never get back to the people is usually the untold story. It is a problem, but there are answers. You can make a difference by supporting the original artists and ensuring an ethical system. By shopping fair trade.

You can enjoy beautiful hand woven linens, like these cloth napkins, while also supporting a great cause through the organization Education and More.

Why strive for fair trade?

Fair trade means the policies, procedures, payment, and working conditions are FAIR. When an item is sold through a fair trade company, it means no child labor was involved. It means the workers were paid a fair, living wage that can help them pay for food, medical care, and education. It means you are supporting a system with a trickle down effect that helps the economy of the worker’s community.
Education and More: Education Children and Reducing Poverty.

Education and More is a nonprofit christian organization working to reduce poverty in Guatemala. How? Talented women (mothers, daughter, sisters,) use their strengths to create beautiful handcrafted artisanal woven textiles. Education and More then organizes Fair Trade sales of the goods and the artisans receive a fair, living wage for their hard work.

We received colorful cloth napkins and dish towels, and can verify, that not only are these textiles lovely and vibrant, but also durable and of exceptional quality.  Each napkin is 15 by 15 inches and made from absorbent cotton. Reusable napkins are eco-friendly and make a great replacement for paper towels. Plus, they dress up your table and turn any simple meal into a celebration.

The woven tea towels are a generous 20 by 25 inches and can add some pizzazz to your kitchen. They are 100% cotton and come in colors to match your napkins and placemats. If your kitchen is anything like ours, you probably go though a couple tea towels per day, so having several on hand is always convenient. Luckily, they comes in sets of two. If you are short a placemat, just fold a tea towel and you’ve got it covered. Our towels sometimes go missing since the kids like to turn them into supergirl and superboy capes.

Education and More has a really cool set up. Yes, you can purchase items directly from the website shop. However, the really fun part is hosting a party. Sales parties are nothing new. Many people, usually women, have hosted sales parties for food storage containers, makeup, baskets, and more. An artisanal textiles party through Education and More though, supports women on a whole other level. Most of the creators of these beautiful napkins, tablecloths, scarves,, etc., are women raising children and trying to better their lives. Hosting a fair trade sale means you are trying to make a difference in the lives of these women and supporting their economy. You don’t need to travel far and wide to help fight poverty!

  1. I really love how this organization put so much thought into the people of Guatemala. Organizations like this help this people to be treated fairly, get an educating and have access to healthcare. I’ve tried hard to support local or fair trade companies.

  2. I love that Education and More has a healthy home project! I love that they are able to help these families with a safer way to cook for their families. I love that they are able to help them make their homes safer for them and their children!

  3. I love that they allow people of all ages to finish their education. Learning has no limits and I’m glad they help promote that!

  4. I love that you can host a fair trade sale. I love that you can still help out by throwing a sale party, in the event you can’t purchase anything yourself. Many ways to help!

  5. I really like how this organization has sponsoring a child. I’m sure this has helped change many of the children’s lives. Thanks for the give away.

  6. I like the sponsoring a child program. Helping people to get treated fairly is a great thing to strive for. What a neat company!

  7. I love that this organization has a mission to help both the artists and the children. Education is key to ensuring that people can be self sustaining and I think this is a great cause. I love that more and more attention is getting placed on education and treating people fairly. I am all for inexpensive products, but not at the cost of people being able to make a living for themselves and their families.

  8. I think this is a great way to help others realize their potential through the efforts of the Fair Trade Sales.

  9. I read that I could sponsor a student and that the BENEFITS OF SPONSORSHIP are many; like a Bible, School Supplies, a Backpack, a Pair of New Shoes, Clothing, School Fees and other benefits.

  10. I love that by hosting a show are able to help families send their children to school to stop the cycle of illiteracy! Reading is so important!

  11. When you sponsor a student, you not only provide them with school supplies, but you are able to stay connected with them and build friendships. Love it!

  12. I like that you can’t donate to the WHERE MOST NEEDED fund in order to cover emergency , food, or any other cost that a family may need.

  13. I love that they are preserving an important part of the culture by making it economically sustainable.

  14. I love that thier mission is to reduce poverty in Guatemala by providing
educational opportunities for the people. It’s a mission that works with the people rather than excluding them.

  15. I really love that instead of hand outs the organization helps connect artisans with markets they otherwise would be unable to access.

  16. I love that you can purchase the weaving looms and accessories! Great way to take up a craft, and help people out!

  17. I love their commitment to being fair trade– it’s such an important way to help small businesses in developing countries grow. And when local businesses grow, it’s good for the whole community!

  18. everyone deserves a living wage. especially those with such specialized skill sets like weaving! i love this so much (as a human , a small business owner, and a weaver!!)
