The Epic Battle with Toddler Tooth Brushing: Hello Oral Care

We are going through growing pains in our house.
Not of the true, physical nature.
Not pains in the way people describe needing a life reorganization.
It is a period of growing pains, in that my older two kids are leaving toddlerhood. Lucky is turning five. Wyn just turned three. Gone are the days of life in the moment and carefree existence.  Now we have preschool, and structure, and teeth brushing, and good habit encouragement.
I was making dentist appointments this week and an uncomfortable fact wormed its way to the front of my brain: I am terrible at enforcing oral care with my kids. I rarely did that thing when they were infants where you wipe off their teeth with a cloth. I also didn’t brush their teeth every day when they were young toddlers. Lucky always wanted toothpaste, but hated the mint flavor. Wyn just plain hates having them brushed, much like her hair.
Every year, for Easter, I add a toothbrush to each basket thinking a shiny, new toothbrush might entice them (and myself) into cooperating. This year, I am taking it a step further with some awesome tasting toothpaste in fun flavors.

Hello Products offers toothpaste in supermint, mojito mint, pink grapefruit mint, and peach mango mint flavors, including some kid specific pastes like Bubble Gum, Green Apple, and Blue Raspberry. Not only do the Hello pastes taste great, they are free of artificial sweeteners, dyes, preservatives, triclosan and polyethylene microbeads. Hello pastes are not tested on animals, they are ADA approved, vegan friendly, and made in the USA. (Made in the USA is a big issue, if you remember that whole imported, poisoned toothpaste debacle from several years ago.) If you are looking for a more naturally friendly toothpaste, Hello might be the answer. Even their simple toothbrush design is made from 50% recycled materials.

Lucky is about to turn five. Getting him to try new things, let alone toothpaste can take some coaxing.

“But son, it is raspberry flavored!”
“Where are the raspberries?”
“Ummm”

 Success!

Hello has released the kid’s line of toothpastes at select Target stores. Aside from protecting against cavities and strengthen enamel, these pastes have fun flavors with no mint. (No worries, the adult line still has all the minty goodness.) My kids like the blue raspberry flavor. I must admit, I really like the green apple. I am pretty sure I might end up swiping the green apple paste from time to time. Since it doesn’t have any mint, it also doesn’t make that horrid taste in your mouth if you have a swig of something sweet or sour right after brushing your teeth. If I feel like an extra tooth brushing mid-day, I don’t like to scowl when I take a sip of my lemonade ice tea.

Fear not mint lovers. The super mint is just as it claims. Your mouth will be ready for smooching. If you are feeling crazy mix some mojito mint and peach mango mint for a mango margarita party. Hello paste has just the right amount of grittiness to get a good clean feeling, without getting all foamy. I really dislike foamy toothpastes.

For anyone who might be a little crazy and insist their toiletries match their bathroom, you could pick a flavor based on your color theme. I happen to like the simple packaging. Even better, is the simple tooth brushes Hello produces. Not only are the bristles strong enough to not bend all over, meaning it actually gets my teeth clean, but the handle is slim like old brushes so it fits in the brush holders. It has been years since I had a toothbrush that could actually fit in a toothbrush holder built into the tile. The retro look of hello products jives with my retro-desperately-needing-a-makeover-bathrooms.

  1. An all natural toothpaste sounds like just what the doctor ordered. And by doctor, I mean me. I would love to get some of this for my kids! Thanks so much for sharing.
