The Ever Evolving Pocket Diaper

Pocket diapers are incredibly popular. As much as I like other styles of cloth diapers, our home stash is made up of at least sixty percent pocket diapers. They are easy and straight forward. They consist of a fleece inner lining(or similar stay-dry fabric), a water-proof PUL (polyurethane laminate) outer layer, and an insert for absorbency. Inserts can be purchased in a wide variety of materials, including hemp, bamboo, cotton, and various synthetic fibers. I have quite a few different brands, and no two are identical. (Well, OK, with the increase in rebranded China diapers, there are many that are identical, but before the last three years, they were all quire different.

The pocket diaper was available via catalog orders back in the seventies. Although, plenty of brands claimed to be the original creators in the past 15 years. Do not be fooled! Innovative cloth diapers have existed beyond flats or prefolds for 50+ years, but were not patented at the time. (There have been some interesting patent wars among some top brands as well as bullying of the little guys, but let’s not get off track.)

Since then, the pocket diaper has evolved quite a bit. We now have sleeve diapers with an opening on each end, allowing for the insert to agitate out on its own in the pre-rinse. There are also pockets and sleeve diapers where the inserts can snap in place inside the pocket or even on top of the sleeve or pocket.
Soon enough came the double gusset diapers like Glowbug Cloth Diapers. Several brands feature double gussets for that extra blowout protection.
Glowbug has decided to it a step further in their new model by introducing the 360º protection wall. I have only seen this innovation in one other cloth diaper, but it was not a pocket style diaper.

The new Glowbug cloth diaper is still one size with snap closures. It also offers dual openings at the front and back so that inserts can agitate out of the sleeve on their own. The inserts snap to the front of the diaper to reduce shifting. The sleeve fabric is the same lovely soft  jersey style fabric that remains nice on sensitive skin. But the dual leg gussets now extend in a full oval offering the gusset protection across the front and back in addition to the sides. Some babies do not need this type of protection. But, if you have kids that do, it can be a lifesaver! My babies have been known to fill a diaper from end to end and have left me scratching my head on what they ate to cause such a mess.  Also, we never seemed to fully reach that “ploppable” stage that makes it all easier.  Therefore, a 360º gusset wall is awesome  in my mind. I only wish I had some for the newborn stage. (Maybe again some day.) If you have a little one still in the runny, explosive diaper stage, I say give the new Glowbug Cloth Diapers a try.

Where will pocket diapers go next? I cannot imagine. They have come so far, I have no idea what the next step in their evolution could involve.

What is the next innovation you would like to see? (Other than a self cleaning diaper, ha ha!)
