Adventures in Potty Training, Big Boy Beds, & Saving a Mattress

Epica Ultra Plus Waterproof Sheet Protector
*Pad c/o Epica*

Our son turned three years old a couple months back and it has been a challenge to say the least when it comes to “accidents”. I have written previously about our challenges with diapering and potty training and his preference for going without a diaper at all. This would be all fine and dandy, if he were A) Fully potty trained, and B) woke during the night to go on his own. I have to admit, although we have made some very small strides in the potty training department, I feel like it is one step forward and six steps back. The crib mattress fiasco was a headache to say the least. It was getting time to convert his crib into a toddler bed, but his mattress was destroyed because in addition to ripping off his diaper during the night, he had started removing all of his bedding as well as the mattress protector. After drying out the crib mattress enough times, it became unusable. It was time for a whole new bed! We purchased the simplest twin bed we could find and went with a platform style so that we could have the mattress sunk super low in order to make it very difficult for him to remove the sheets and mattress pad.

I have been determined to outsmart my three year old in order to keep his bed in good shape! This time I decided to go for a double layer of protection. Enter the Epica Ultra Plus Waterproof Sheet Protector.

The Epica Ultra Plus Waterproof Sheet Protector is perfect for keeping our three year old’s bed protected from accidents and it is way easier to strip off the bed and wash compared to a full mattress protector.

The Epica Ultra Plus Waterproof Sheet Protector details:

  • 34 inches by 52 inches in size.
  • 50% cotton and 50% polyester.
  • Soft fabric on top layer
  • Non-slip grip on the bottom side.
  • Machine washable and goes in the dryer.

When laying length wise, this is perfect for a twin bed. I placed it between the top and bottom sheet and have our son sleep on the top sheet. This protector is soft and makes no crinkly sounds. He does not even notice it is there, and he is usually sensitive to everything.  When an accident happens, the Epic Mattress Protector quickly absorbs the mess and prevents it from spreading to the mattress and other bedding. The soft feel and non-slip backside make me want one for my own bed should I have another baby. Sleeping on a towel when your milk supply is on overdrive is not all that comfortable.

This style of protector is a big time saver for me. I have several other protectors on each bed and crib in the house, but most are not absorbent and lay beneath the sheets. Having an extra layer is definitely helpful.

I know it will be another year or two before we can say goodbye to nighttime accidents, so it is important to keep up with everything I can do to make this time less frustrating for all of us in our family. The protectors I had on his crib and even our own bed are completely destroyed and did not even last a year. I have the same kind on our daughter’s crib mattress, and I know I need a better system for her. It is just not eco friendly to need to replace a mattress so often! Plus, the $29.95 or less price tag of a protector pad is way cheaper than a new bed.

Lucky is enjoying his new big boy bed in his new room. I really hope we all can enjoy having a potty trained little boy soon. *Fingers crossed.*
