*Review Product c/o Nellie’s All-natural*
Well, after struggling with more hard water issues this Spring, it was time to experiment with more adventures in laundry detergent! We were suffering in a bad way with buildup from our previous detergent caused by our hard water. It is just SO HARD. I am interested to see if the water in our new place is a little softer. At least we will own finally and can get a water softener if necessary!
I had yet to give Nellie’s All Natural Laundry Soda * a whirl, so it was time. Now, using a plain laundry soda, Arm&Hammer soda ash specifically, was the norm when I was younger. We all added soda ash to the regular laundry and vinegar to the rinse cycle. Then hung everything out on the clothes line for the whole world to see. Including your knickers. Yep. So, the vintage-y feel and look of Nellie’s Laundry Soda has great appeal for me.
First of all the ingredient list is hilariously short.
Nellie’s All Natural Laundry Soda Ingredients:
- Sodium Silicate
- Coconut oil based surfactants
I mean really, if that is all it takes, then what on Earth is all that other junk other detergents have listed?
Second of all, it is cloth diaper friendly. (Obviously. Did you read that ingredient list?)
I used Nellie’s for a month on my diapers and some other laundry and I am rather impressed. It works great for stripping the other junk out of your diapers and getting them back to a fresh start.
Nellie’s All Natural Laundry Soda is low sudsing so you can use it is regular or HE washing machines. I used three scoops for the first couple washes in my giant Kenmore top loader since we had horrendous buildup of ammonia and a former detergent. I was able to move down to two spoonfuls afterward. The included scoop holds a little under a tablespoon, so I am not talking about a lot of detergent. If you have a smaller machine, your detergent really will last for the number of loads listed on the package. Obviously, use less with soft water. Once I used Nellie’s to strip my diapers, they stayed pretty fresh with Nellie’s and did not suffer any ammonia stink. In fact, the only fabric that did retain some odor was my husband’s wick-away shirts, but I have yet to discover ANY detergent that can compete with those armpits.
