Do you ever just get sickened by all of the plastic around us? I know so many of us combat the tidal wave of plastic in modern day life by choosing green alternatives like reusable shopping bags, cloth diapers, UNpaper towels and the like. Have you extended these green efforts to other packaging? Lunch baggies? Wrapping paper? Gift Bags?

while I have never purchased a box of sandwich baggies, I do often use Tupperware and wax paper. The Tupperware is bulky and often does not fit the way I would like in our lunch totes and soft coolers. Wax paper is more malleable, but wears out quickly and just gets tossed in the trash. I have finally jumped on the reusable snack bag bandwagon and started my collection with ReUsies!

ReUsies are a Seattle based business dedicated to helping families stay green and healthy!

ReUsies bags are reusable snack and sandwich bags made of 100% cotton lined with nylon. They are BPA and phthalate free, as well as CPSIA compliant. They are super easy to open and close with hook & loop closures (aplix). My toddler is a little obsessed with the sound of aplix, so I have to hide these from him.

The Snack bag is approximately 6 in. by 5 in. and is perfect for snacks or even a half sandwich.  The larger Sandwich bag is approximately 7.5 in. by 6 in. and can hold a whole standard sized sandwich or any number of convenient snacks. ReUsies come is a bunch of cute prints to suit anyone’s tastes!

We are not really sandwich people in our family, so we tend to use these bags for other snacks like carrot sticks, nuts, seeds, apple slices, raisins, dried fruit, and even cheese slices. They are not water proof (most water proof materials really are not safe for food storage), so I would stick with dry snacks.

I absolutely love how cute and versatile these bags are for lunches, travel, and organizing my diaper bag. I am not the best planner when it comes to feeding my kids meals, so I like to have a few baggies of easy eats on me at all times. I love having a couple of ReUsies packed in the double stroller for those emergencies.

What is great about reusable snack bags, is they do not need to stick with food items!

You can use them for :

  • makeup bags
  • small gift bags
  • organizing your purse
  • small toy pieces
  • receipts
  • gift wrap
  • containing dry wipes
  • and so much more!

Last year I wrapped my homemade soap and shampoo bars in brown wax paper for gift giving, but wouldn’t putting them in a ReUsies bag be so cute?

Another thing I love about reusable baggies is they appeal to my frugal side. The costs of disposable products can really add up over the course of a year or two. If you use plastic baggies every day, imagine the big pile of wasted plastic going straight into the trash. You may as well take the few dollars you spent on those plastic bags and throw that in the trash too! We live in the city where the cost of things at a nearby store is astronomical, but driving out to the burbs for those items also costs gas. There are hidden costs in everything. Even if reusable bags do not save you money over the cost of plastic bags, you are still saving space in your garbage bin each year. trust me, when you start going green in several parts of your life, you start to really notice what makes up your family’s trash.

lastly, and still just as important, is that cloth bags are simply safer for your food. Plastic can leach chemicals into your family’s snacks, especially if it heats up. (Sunshine anyone?) It gets cold up here and I notice the nearby elementary school always has quite a few kids hanging out on the heat grates before school. I can only imagine how hot their lunches might get in the backpacks strewn across the grating. I am always mindful of using plastic in other aspects of our kitchen, so why would this be any different?

  1. I want to use reusable snack bags, but we are moving soon so it is hard to justify the purchase. If I win some though that would be another story 😉

  2. already do cloth diapers, reusable shopping bags, recycle, compost…. looking to switch to mama cloth or other non-sposies option for menstruation.

    1. silly computer- removed part of my response…….

lunch- switching to reuseable bags, reuse containers- buy more in bulk to reduce packaging.

  3. We have used cloth bags before, years ago and would love to have them again! We also cloth diaper and use cloth wipes

  4. I don’t use reusable bags right now….I use tupperware containers, or containers that used to hold food we purchased…..cottage cheese, soft margarine spread, etc. I agree with you that sometimes those shapes don’t work so well in the lunch tote!

  5. We haven’t made the switch yet to reusable bags but I have become very interested in them and want to give them a try. The print I like the best from the ReUsies site is “Which Came First?”.

  6. I haven’t yet switched to reusable snack bags, but I’d really like to (that’s why I’d love to win this giveaway!). I use reusable containers for almost everything else, though.

  7. My husband would love the camo. He doesn’t like to bring a lunch bag, but I sure could use this to keep him from using my Tupperware!

  8. We use paper bags, rather than plastic. When we shop we use reusable bags to eliminate the use of plastic bags in our home. We do end up with them occasionally…but we will reuse those plastic bags over and over and over again!

  9. I’ve sold Tupperware off and on over the years so we mostly use those containers for lunches and snacks. I don’t buy snack size stuff. I buy the bulk size and put in smaller containers. I actually only pack a lunch for hubby since the kids eat at home. I buy one box of sandwich bags a year at the most so obviously we don’t use those much.

  10. I would like the airplanes print. I haven’t used re-usable snack bags yet, but I might once I need to carry food around for my little tot.

  11. I like simply blue!!! No we have not made switch to reusable baggies, but I think that is next on the list 🙂

  12. I love re-useable baggies, I have some patterns to make them, but my little one keeps me busy so I have yet to make some. Such a great giveaway!
