This “slaw” is my version of the crack slaw recipes that many low starch eaters toss out as a life saver. Slaw stir fries are a favorite of mine! Cabbage is a perfect low carb bulk replacement for rice in most recipes and definitely one of my favorites!
- 1 pound ground meat. (Chicken, Turkey, Beef, Lamb)
- 1 head celery sliced on the diagonal 1 red onion chopped
- Garlic to taste
- 3 tablespoons tamari or other wheat free fermented soy sauce
- 3 tablespoon fat (olive oil, lard, bacon grease, sesame oil)
- 1 full head red cabbage chopped
- 1 tablespoon sweetener (honey, pineapple juice, or other natural sweetener)
- 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper of dried Thai peppers (optional)
- 1 tablespoon dried crushed red chilies (or more if you like it spicy!)
- Fresh ground black pepper to taste
Prep time 5 minutes
Cook time 20 minutes
Place your ground meat in a large pot and begin browning. Most people like ground beef, but my husband does not eat red meat so I used ground chicken. Add your fat and garlic now. Bacon fat from that jar of fat you SHOULD have in your fridge is great. Sometimes I just use olive oil. Some people love the sesame.
When the meat is half cooked add your celery and red onion. Keep cooking until the meat is fully cooked. About 10 minutes total on medium heat.
Add your additional spices and tamari. I make this with Asian hot peppers usually, but it would be great with cumin if you used lamb.
Mix your spices in well and add your chopped cabbage. Red is pretty, but it tastes great with green as well. Sprinkle or drizzle your bit of sweetener in and mix everything really well. Crank your heat up and continue mixing over high heat for about five minutes.
Done!
Your celery and cabbage will only be slightly cooked and still crunchy.
This is a fantastic alternative to traditional stir fry. You could put it on rice, but we eat it as is for a light, low carb dinner. Even my toddler likes this dish!

this looks delish !! steph im going to try it!!!
I made low carb red hot cabbage last night and have half the cabbage left over. Hmm, this gives me an idea, especially since I have ground beef to use up too! My husband hates celery though so I will need to find an other kind of ‘greenery’ to add to this.
