Growing up I spent nearly every day with my grandmother. We cooked, we sewed, we jumped rope, built towers of blocks, and come holiday season, we baked and decorated a whole lot of cookies. We have a large extended family, so cookie season means dozens and dozens of intricate desserts.
Our Spread Cheer basket is sponsored by Betty crocker.
I admit, I’m not actually a big fan of baking in general. I do like the idea though. We had Thanksgiving week off from preschool, so I decided it was a good time to decorate some sugar cookie cutouts as out craft activity!
I took a shortcut and used Betty Crocker cookie mix and icing I picked up at Walmart. What can I say? I’ll save the from-scratch endeavor for another day. The kids had fun pushing cookies cutters into dough, and I enjoyed the ease. The only downer was I ran out of parchment paper, and I’ve really come to love it for baking.
Once our gingerbread men, snowmen, holly leaves, snowflakes, and Christmas trees were cooled, we busted out the buttercream and colored sugar.
Why, oh why, do they make the holes of those decorative sugar shakers so huge? Have you used those with a three year old?
“Honey, just hold it side ways and tap with your finger.”
“Just tap.”
“Don’t dump.”
“No! Stop dumping!!!!”
I believe there is a holly leaf cutout under there somewhere. Ha ha.
I put them out on the counter for the icing to firm up before packing them up, only to find my son had snuck half of them! So we were out a bunch of cookies, and he claimed to have a tummy ache.
Me: “Tummy ache, huh? And what did you learn? “
Son: “Cookies are awesome.”
OK, fair enough.
We packed them up (what was left!) to bring to a neighbor. Our neighbor lady babysat Mory for me a few weeks back and this week she even brought over apple pie. It was time to bring her a treat and spread the cheer.

I was able to #SpreadCheer a few days ago for a Church Christmas play that little children put on for our fellowship. I just loved the idea of children digging into these snowmen cookies. It was some work to decorate but fun! Thanks for the giveaway! https://twitter.com/purelifemama/status/675438978984624128
