Spinach Margarita Smoothie

What? Gross? Hey, don’t knock it til you try it. This super low calorie smoothie is great for reducing bloating and water retention. And no, it does not contain booze. Unless you want it to contain booze. However,  for water retention relief, I recommend you drink this in the morning and I’m not one to suggest booze for breakfast. That just sounds like a bad idea.

Spinach Margarita Smoothie

2 cups fresh Spinach leaves (packed)
2 whole peeled limes
1 whole peeled clementine/tangerine
A tiny pinch of sea salt
1 cup crushed ice
1 teaspoon honey
Optional 1/2 cup of water if too thick

Place all ingredients in your blender or large container for an immersion blender and whip on high until smooth.

This will be an awesome bright green color. So make sure to drink it in front of your veggie hating friends and make them gag. I promise you won’t really taste the spinach that much.

Why on earth would you want a spinach smoothie that tastes like a margarita? Well, I’ve been jonesing for a margarita, but not for the tequila headache. And, I never filled my iron supplement prescription after my doctor told me I was mildly anemic. Spinach has lots of iron. It was a two birds one stone decision that ended up being a great idea. Spinach in a smoothie that tastes vaguely of limeade is some of the very few green things my kids will put anywhere near their mouths. Except broccoli.  My four year old loves broccoli.  He likes eating the “baby trees” as he calls them.

Now I wonder, if the spinach margarita smoothies had tequila, would the little bit of extra nutrition prevent the headache? I’m not sure I’m willing to find out. I guess it will remain a mystery.
