Green Tones Eco-Friendly Wood Toys

You know that aisle in the big box store filled with musical cadence and a rainbow of plastic wonder? That’s right. The toy aisle. It is a little scary. And even a reason for trepidation  if your kids are the type to whine and plead. My kids are not to that phase yet and I hope to skip over it. Like many parents, I set out with some goals in motherhood, one of which was to limit plastic toys and clutter. I have been somewhat successful in this endeavor.  My kids have some wooden natural toys and some obnoxious plastic. I’ll admit the latter mostly comes from grandma and that is OK.  It doesn’t change my original goal.  An all-or-nothing approach rarely works.

I love wood toys. I love the look of them. I love the sustainability. I love the general idea. Green Tones is owned by the music company, Hohner which has been manufacturing quality musical instruments since 1857.
Green Tones Eco-Friendly Wood toys offer instruments made with:

  • sustainable chemical free rubber woods
  • non-toxic glue
  • low VOC water based paint

The Green Tones line includes drums, whistles, glockenspiels, shakers and more for children up to four years old and beyond. My four year old is quite envious of his sister’s drum!

My daughter is obsessed with sticks and collects them everywhere we go. She uses them to tap the walls all over the house. Of course, what toy could be more perfect for her than a wooden drum with a mallet? She loves it, and I love that it fits in with our family’s values. Win win. Unless I have a headache.
The carved lines and wood variance creates different tones depending on where the mallet makes contact. We haven’t dropped the drum down the staircase or anything, but it seems fairly sturdy.

Green Tones offers several wood shakers filled with recyclable pellets for children 12 months and up. We have the baby bear shaker with a loop that makes it easy to attach to the crib or stroller. Checkout the video on how these bear shakers are made!  They are actually pretty neat. VIDEO.

I let her play with the bear shaker a bit and then tucked it away for the new baby. Although, given my daughter’s love of maracas, I’m not sure it will stay in the drawer.

We have all heard through the years, how music can enhance children’s math and cognitive skills. Why not give them a play time with instruments to nurture that development early on? My kids love to sing and play drums and harmonicas. It isn’t just about making noise. My own grandmother used to pull out her pots and wooden spoons for us to tap on as young children. Playing with instruments can even improve problem solving skills and hand-eye coordination.

With our home already housing guitars and trumpets, it seems natural to acquire instruments for our toddlers. The rubberwood makes a nice sound and almost looks more like a decorative accessory than a toy. Green Tones instruments are proof that you can provide toys to your children that are not only fun and functional, but also sustainable, attractive, and posh.

I think my little guy would like the mama bear drum and the papa bear glock!

  2. My daughter has recently become obsessed with playing instruments (like drumming on the cereal box), so I know she’d love any of these products. I think she’d especially like the Temple Blocks, Monkey Glock, or Beginner Drum set.

My son would love the train whistle! And my noise loving baby girl would spend hours playing with the barrel shaker!
