Goodbye Pretty Illusion

We have just over two more weeks in this house before Two Men and a Truck hauls our things to my sister’s garage for a bit. We got a few quotes from companies that will store your stuff, but the price was outrageous considering we don’t even own much.

This house wasn’t all bad. Most people saw the elements that hooked us from the start. The dramatic house flip that caught your eye and made you ignore quality issues and function.

Now, I am a woman. I like pretty and attractive architecture and decor. But, I also need a highly functional living space. However, we had looked at a few houses and everything was such a disappointment, that this house easily seduced us. Can you blame us? The above pics only show a few corners and they portray a lovely house. Then, within weeks of moving in, the design flaws became apparent. The builder who did the flip was definitely not someone who actually lived in any spaces he worked on. Closets were missing, rooms were backwards, the kitchen made no sense. A giant wall removed to create an open layout, was actually a very important piece needed for function.

This house is beautiful from a distance. I will miss that part of it. I will miss that wow factor people experience when they first walk in. But, there is a reason it was so cheap.

Why say any of this?

Well, we have a new place! At least so far we do. They accepted an offer we figured was a long shot and we have a closing date. We can even forgo the inspection because they just had one and fixed all of the recommendations. We are getting together with their inspector to go over the list. The catch? Well, it is a style I never would have pictured my self inhabiting. A 1960’s build with a walkout basement. This house is good sixties though because it is essentially a time capsule. No jerk-wad came through and gave it a heinous makeover in the eighties. There are a lot of quirks, but at least they have retro cred. Plus, any changes we make to the place will be for personal preference and not because we HAVE to make the changes. No construction needed.

The sellers even agreed to our suggested closing date, which technically was generous on our part, since we went for more than 30 days even though it means more inconvenience and cost for us. So, IF all goes ok, we should only be homeless for about a month. Unfortunately, that will be a very uncomfortable month since the two kids and two cats force us to have very limited options on places to stay. No matter where we end up, I will be completely isolated from the outside world, which has me a bit concerned as far as this prenatal depression is concerned. I will deal with that as it comes.

  1. So glad to hear you found a new place! What a relief. Even though I don’t know you in real life, I feel like our lives are sort of parallel right now… we’re expecting a baby and just put a contract on a new house on Friday. I’m glad to hear we’re not the only ones crazy enough to take on several life events at the same time. Hope everything goes smoothly for you… the purchase, the “homeless” period of time, your prenatal depression. Just don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Sending lots of good vibes your way. 🙂

    1. Thank you. And good luck with your house and new baby!. Transitions can be tough. Hopefully we can both look back in a few months in a more relaxed state. 🙂
