How many ways are there to ‘green’ your kitchen? It is actually an overwhelming number.
We’ve heard the warnings for years. Nonstick cooking pans coated in PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene), can be dangerous. This coating works well as a nonstick surface, but at high temps it can release fumes that not only can kill your pets, but is also harmful to people. Creating this surface also uses PerFluoroOctanoic Acid which has been shown to be quite harmful to our environment. In our home, we generally own stainless steal cookware and I am hoping to accrue a nice collection of cast iron when I have the money. However, I know cast iron is not for everyone and people appreciate nonstick pan.
The Green Earth Pan by Ozeri is free of PTFE and PFOA because it uses GREBLON, a durable ceramic coating derived from nature. GREBLON does NOT put out harmful chemicals at high heat and remains safe for consistent use. The Green Earth Pan is made from anodized aluminum for even cooking and is compatible with induction top stoves.
We have spent the past month using a Green Earth pan every single day for a variety of dishes, from grilled cheese sandwiches to omelets. So far, as long as we follow the guidelines for the pan, it has been a pretty useful cooking implement. The Green Earth Pan by Ozeri should be lightly seasoned with a tiny bit of oil or other fat before use. To maintain its nonstick surface, only wash it gently by hand with dish soap and a soft sponge.
We had no problems with vegetables or eggs sticking at all. Meat items were a little more likely to adhere to the surface, but not as much as they would on our stainless steel pans. This was the textured pan and I would personally suggest you try the smooth pan instead. I know the texture was suppose to create air pockets for more even cooking and to prevent sticking even more, but I found the dimples to be annoying for items like eggs or pancakes.
I have read some mixed reviews of this pan online, and I did not come across those issues like too much sticking or the pan having a loose handle. Perhaps those customers were the unlucky bunch to get a bad batch. We are almost 30 uses in with our pan and for only $33, I feel this pan is decent for the price. it has certainly worked as well as any other pan I purchased for this price.
You can purchase the Green Earth Pan on Amazon.
*UPDATE 3-11-2014. I am still using my pan, but it does require more oil to get a non-stick effect. For what it is worth, I am not sure I would call it a non-stick pan, so much as a slightly let fat needed pan. **UPDATE 6-5-2015. we have been using this pan for 22 months and it is most definitely no longer nonstick. Haha! To be fair, I have scratched it all to hell, so no pan would be nonstick at this point. we use it for meats and veggies now.
