One of my favorite memories of childhood was all of the little crafty projects I did with my grandmother. She would pull out modeling clay, construction paper, rubber bands, sewing needles, fabric scraps, and whatever else we figured could turn into something fun. We made our own paste from flour and water and collected leaves and sticks from the back yard for our art projects. We collected the fabric samples from the sears catalog each month for our sewing projects. This was back before gel pens and jars of glitter were available so we often were creative when it came to art supplies. I guess you could say we were “green” before it became a thing.
I hope to recreate this with my own children and have to an extent. One thing I lack is creativity when it comes to projects at times, so the craft kits from Green Kid Crafts are a great resource.
We recently had the opportunity to try out a Discovery box with an ocean theme from Green Kid Crafts and it was super fun! The Discover box came with three project kits:
- Pin the Tale on The Whale – Create a pin the tale game with felt cutouts
- Sailboat – Make a wood sailboat colored with pastels with a fabric sail
- Coral Reef Postcard – Make a postcard with watercolor paint and soap
The Pin the Tail on the Whale and the Sailboat were perfect for my three year old. The painted postcard is a little too advanced for him.
I love that each kit comes with almost everything you need for each project. For Pin the Tail on the Whale, we only needed scissors to cut out the felt tails.
Cutting out felt was a job for me, but sticking the Velcro circles on the back of our tails was easy enough for the three year old. I love this little game since we can leave it affixed to his bedroom wall with no worries.
All of the materials in Green kid Crafts kits are sustainably made whenever possible. Not only do you have the opportunity to be more eco-conscious with crafting projects, but you also have an opportunity with each kit to discuss environmentalism and sustainability with your children. This is win-win in my book!
